Aviation and Aerospace Technician Accelerated Training Course(s)

Objective

The objective of this project is to evaluate the need for accelerated technical training courses (also known as short courses):

  • to assist employers who require employees with basic training to fill immediate needs;
  • to encourage new workers to enter the aviation and aerospace sector;
  • to engage existing workers to retrain for skilled jobs within the aviation and aerospace industry or for career advancement.

Industry input

CAMC believes that skilled worker participation is essential to the success and advancement of the aviation and aerospace sector, and to Canada’s economy as a whole. We are looking for your feedback to determine whether current extensive training requirements are a barrier for both employers and employees. Does the style of available technical training need to adapt to current demand by accelerating course delivery in order to facilitate a swifter transition to the workplace? Could new short courses help current employees upgrade their skills to assist with career advancement or an occupation transition?

Currently, the number of youth entering the job market is insufficient to replace retiring “baby boomers.” It is imperative, therefore, to determine whether new workers are deterred from entering the aviation and aerospace sector job market because current training requirements are too lengthy. In addition, anecdotal evidence indicate that some employers need up to ten times the number of current graduates from college programs, in certain trades. It is important for CAMC to assess the immediate needs of employers and determine whether accelerated or condensed courses would mitigate the impact of any current shortage in particular trades.

The questions

CAMC needs input from industry on this topic and will be asking the following questions:

  • Do aerospace and aviation companies see a need for accelerated technical courses or new short courses?
  • If so, which skill sets are required by industry?
  • How much time is required to learn these new skills?

The report

Following the data gathering, CAMC will submit a report assessing the need for the development of Aviation and Aerospace Technician Accelerated Training Course(s); extrapolating the skill sets needed, and the timeframe required for marketing and delivery; and presenting an analysis of the feasibility of education sector cooperation for training delivery.
