| From the Executive Director (Robert Donald) | | | The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for Civil Aviation. Canada, is one of the 190 Contracting States that are members of ICAO. In March, ICAO sponsored a symposium at its headquarters in Montreal, the topic of which was “Next Generation of Aviation Professionals” (NGAP). Its focus was on the significant projected shortages of aviation professionals worldwide and how the industry should address this critical issue.

| Update: CAMC’s Safety Management Systems Project | | | CAMC was awarded a contract in 2007 to develop a suite of SMS learning and facilitation tools to be completed in three phases over a period of approximately 36 months. The project objective is to aid in the establishment of an enhanced safety culture across the industry by introducing new knowledge, skills and attitudes for both current and future employees.

| New Project: Update to CAMC’s Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) Curriculum | | | CAMC is launching a project to update the Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) Curriculum so that it accurately defines the knowledge, skills and competencies required in today’s aviation maintenance industry. This project addresses a skills issue and will serve to ensure that students graduating from CAMC-accredited AMT programs are well prepared to enter the workforce.

He looked left and right, straining to make out some familiar marker before he realized he had set up perfectly for a straight-in approach and Brandon was dead ahead. His instructor chuckled, “Adam, power flight is not like those gliders you flew last summer, everything comes a lot faster.” “Mr. Vodopivec is right,” Adam thought, “you plan ahead as usual but you have to make critical decisions a great deal quicker.” Without too much fanfare, Adam put the Cessna 172 into a final approach and “greased” in a landing. “Now don’t get cocky, Adam,” Mr. Vodopiviec quipped, quoting his favourite line from Star Wars. | Just starting: nine young workers tell their stories | | | In spite of a predicted skilled-worker shortage in the aviation and aerospace industry, many young, just-graduated, would-be workers will tell you that it is hard to find that first job. From what I can see, some of the difficulty is related to requirements for experience and apprenticeship. In this industry, even if someone takes a college diploma course and graduates with good marks and some practical experience, he or she is only part of the way along the qualification trail. | High school students taken under technicians’ wings at 15 Wing | | | by Rebecca Lawrence, Moose Jaw Times-HeraldA new program giving students an insight into aircraft mechanics has been hailed a success by both Bombardier and students alike. Students in grades 11 and 12 at Peacock Collegiate have been taking an aviation maintenance orientation program. Part of the course involves working with aircraft technicians for 75 hours at Bombardier Military Aviation Training at 15 Wing.

| Edmonton Public Schools launches the Skill Centre: | | | helping youth make informed decisions about their futureIn collaboration with local college NAIT, Edmonton Public Schools (EPS) has launched The Skill Centre, at which students from the 13 district high schools may elect to participate in one of four hands-on teaching programs: Aviation Maintenance, Culinary Arts, Foundations of Health Sciences, or Manufacturing/Pre-Engineering. The aviation maintenance course uses CAMC’s Aviation Maintenance Orientation Program (AMOP) curriculum.
