Canadian Propeller

Canadian Propeller, located near the Winnipeg International Airport, has a reputation for excellence in a business where doing the job right the first time is critically important. Overhauling propellers, governors and components demands precision and skill. Years of doing business for large players like Perimeter and Bearskin show that Canadian Propeller delivers experience and credibility. Equally important is the host of commuters, flight schools, aerial applicators and GA clients the company services.

The propeller-service facility is currently one of only 26 Hartzell Propeller Approved Repair Stations in the world, the only “prop shop” in western Canada to pass the exceptionally rigorous certification standards of Hartzell. Canadian Propeller is also a McCauley Propeller Factory Authorized Service Station.

In 1991 when Canadian Propeller first opened its doors on Brooklyn Street, Winnipeg, it had only 2,200 square feet and three employees: Maurice Wills and his father, Ronald Wills (now retired), who are both AMEs, had spent their careers at the main propeller shop in Canada; Debbie Wills, Maurice’s wife, initially handled all the administration and marketing.

The name “Canadian Propeller” can be traced back in Canadian aviation history to the 1930s. Like Pratt & Whitney of Montreal and many of its own clients, Canadian Propeller is a first-generation company.

After setting up the AMO and receiving Transport Canada approval, Canadian Propeller received certification from Hartzell Propeller, a major American propeller manufacturer dating back to 1875 in Ohio and one of the most respected names in the propeller industry.

Today, its scope of work ranges from Cessna 150s, Otters and Beavers to Metros and Beech 1900s. “We also service military work. We maintain everything from a fixed pitch to a composite,” explains Maurice. Fully 90% of the company’s work comes from outside Winnipeg.

Canadian Propeller has grown steadily each year: expanding into a second bay, then a third, and now occupying more than 7,700 square feet with 11 full-time employees.

In a business with no margin of error, Canadian Propeller has a reputation others envy. The 15-year-old company is one of the most outstanding propeller facilities in the trade. The M1- and P41-licensed experienced employees, backed by cutting-edge tools, technology and training, have more than 200 years’ combined experience in propeller, governor and component overhaul and refurbishment.

Less definable but still evident is the commitment to outstanding customer service with competitive pricing. A huge on-site parts inventory is maintained so that Canadian Propeller can offer fast service. This is all backed by a reputation for honesty and good relationships. “A lot of our customers have been coming to us for years,” says Maurice. “We give them our best and they keep coming back.”
