SMS Workshop for Aviation and Aerospace Industry Members

| Safety Management System (SMS) | | | Safety Management System (SMS) December 2007: CAMC has been awarded a contract to develop a suite of SMS learning and facilitation tools. Once developed, these tools will be available without charge to companies in the aviation and aerospace industry across Canada to aid in implementation of SMS programs. The objective of this project is to aid in the establishment of an enhanced safety culture across the industry by introducing new knowledge, skills and attitudes for current as well as future employees. In support of this objective, the project will provide a program for mentoring senior management in addition to providing training content for middle management and trades personnel. It is expected that the project will provide the means of more proactive identification and management of systemic safety risks at all levels of industry as well as an open and transparent safety and reporting culture. ScheduleThe project will run for three years with activities divided over three major phases. Phase 1: Information gathering
This phase includes the development of SMS occupational competency profiles, an analysis of current industry capabilities and the development of the mentoring program. Scheduled completion date: February 1, 2008 Phase 2: Development of SMS toolsThis phase includes the design and development of the learning and facilitation tools. The tools will be validated through the running of a pilot study.
Scheduled completion date: December 31, 2009 Phase 3: Production and distribution of SMS toolsThis phase includes the production of all training materials. Distribution will be via information workshops to be held across Canada to ensure accessibility to the widest possible audience. Workshop dates and locations will be announced in early 2009. Advisory Committees CAMC is actively looking for experienced and knowledgeable personnel from members of industry (carriers, manufacturers, and maintenance providers) as well as from industry associations, training organizations and Transport Canada to participate on the Executive or Steering committees. In general, these committees will meet once or twice a year to review project deliverables and provide project guidance. Note: Committee members are not compensated by CAMC for their labour. However, CAMC does compensate committee members for reasonable travel and accommodation expenses (subject to prior approval by CAMC). Contractors At various times throughout the project, CAMC will be issuing RFPs for assistance in the development of the SMS tools.
